PRESENTATION: Marla and Emma

This week we had the pleasure of being taught by Emma and Marla.  Their Collection 13 provided background on the authors/poets we studied, along with some interesting reading.  Although you have provided evaluations of their performance (which they unfortunately will not see) that will help determine their grade for the presentation, this is an opportunity to discuss what you liked BEST about the presentation.  Also, what did you learn?  Were the power point slides and the YouTube video effective?  What about the handouts and worksheets?  How did you benefit?  What suggestions do you have for their improvement?

Aren't they lucky?  They are all finished now!

Creative Situation with Characters

Choose any three characters (from any of the following stories:  The Awakening, Glass Menagerie, Streetcar Named Desire, The Great Gatsby, and Grapes of Wrath). Do not choose more than one character from any one story.  Create a situation in which all three characters meet each other (at a baseball game, on a flight to Florida, at a BBQ, etc.).  The characters do not necessarily have to be similar at all.  They can represent three totally different personalities. Your task is to SHOW and not TELL the personalities of the characters.  Do not tell us anything about the characters' personalities.  You will SHOW their personalities (as we know them from the stories) through their dialogue and discussions (on a topic or event) with one another in a specific location.  They can make reference to the characters in their respective stories if need be.  This should be quite challenging if done well.  In your responses to one another, you might want to evaluate how well this was done and to make suggestions on anything that could have been added to their vignette. Good Luck

Male characters in The Awakening

By now, we have identified the various female characters in The Awakening; however, we have not focused so much on the males, except perhaps for Robert.  Here, you will make a contrast and comparison between Leonce' and Robert.  What type of character is each?  Do they represent the traditional male or the contemporary male of the time?  Provide evidence with a few quotations (indicating page #).  How is their treatment of women?  Is either more respectful than the other?  Discover and analyze these two men.  Provide your personal input and support your opinions with evidence from the novel.

Edna's INNER VOICE

At this point, you should have started to learn something about the inner stirrings of Edna in The Awakening.  What can you say about her "inner voice"?   How is her voice talking to her?  How is it moving Edna into world that seems to isolate her from her family and community?  Can you find a few quotations that help to illustrate this?  Be sure to mention page # for each quotation that you use.  Try to explain/analyze Edna's reasons for each of her actions that seem to move her more and more into that other world of her yearnings.
