Creative Situation with Characters
Choose any three characters (from any of the following stories: The Awakening, Glass Menagerie, Streetcar Named Desire, The Great Gatsby, and Grapes of Wrath). Do not choose more than one character from any one story. Create a situation in which all three characters meet each other (at a baseball game, on a flight to Florida, at a BBQ, etc.). The characters do not necessarily have to be similar at all. They can represent three totally different personalities. Your task is to SHOW and not TELL the personalities of the characters. Do not tell us anything about the characters' personalities. You will SHOW their personalities (as we know them from the stories) through their dialogue and discussions (on a topic or event) with one another in a specific location. They can make reference to the characters in their respective stories if need be. This should be quite challenging if done well. In your responses to one another, you might want to evaluate how well this was done and to make suggestions on anything that could have been added to their vignette. Good Luck

The night after the Grammys the Hotel was filled with tons of famous people. Among all these people were Daisy, Amanda, Stanley. They were all trying to get back to their homes before the big snow storm hit. Daisy and her daughter were in the hotel waiting for Tom to get back from loading up the taxi to leave. Amanda was in the hall using the pay phone to get a hold of Laura. It had been four hours since she had talked to her. She was trying to check in and see how Laura and Tom were doing back at home. The phone connection wasn't very good and Amanda was frantic. Meanwhile Stanley just got back from the bar. He stumbled down the hall and into his room. While he was passing Amanda when she was on the phone he gave her a tap on the back side laughed and just keep going.

DeleteAn hour later the alarms started to go off through out the hotel. The fire alarms started to sound. The weather made a turn for the worst and everyone need to evacuate the hotel. People were running all over the place to get out in time and to get a taxi out of time before the storm hit. Daisy and her daughter were trying to make it to the lobby to find Tom. Daisy was running ahead of her daughter with all the luggage. Amanda was running around still trying to get a hold of her children back at home. Stanley stumbled out of the room swearing and laughing at all the people making fools of themselves. The stair way was full by the time all three of them made it to them. The only way to get down was the elevator all three of them loaded up and began their trip down to the from the 16th floor. About half the way down the elevator stopped! All the lights went out and it went silent. No one knew what to do. Amanda was yelling and screaming and pounding on the door for someone to let her out. She had to get home to her Laura before the storm hit. An announcer came on and shut Amanda up. The person said that because of the storm the power has gone out and they would not be able to get them out until the power has come back on. They estimate that it should be back on in a few hours. At this point Stanley was still a little hung over and he was swearing up a storm and pounding on the walls to let him out. Daisy's daughter was sitting on the floor crying but Daisy did not seem to care all she cared about what getting a hold of Tom to tell her what happened and why they were not down in the lobby. Amanda ended up picking up her daughter to make her stop crying. Daisy didn't even notice that Amanda had picked her up. Stanley went over and knocked the phone out of Daisy hands and told her to stop being such a fool, that a cell phone would not work while the power was out. Daisy was startled by the actions. The elevate got silence for a while during the timeAmanda was trying to start up a conversation. No one else was talking back though. Finally Amanda asked Daisy where she was from. Daisy then went into her whole life story and talked about her self for a good hour. Her and Amanda were going back and fourth talking and laughing. Not even noticing that her daughter had fallen asleep in the corner. Stanley starting to sober up realized that they had been stuck in the elevator for almost two hours. He knew that there had to be some way out of the elevator. He started to push buttons and take apart the button panel. Amanda noticed what he was doing and immediately started yelling at him. She was saying how he was going to make it worse and he didn't know what he was doing and how she would never see her wonderful Laura again. Stanley dropped what was in his hand and walked over to Amanda. Right as he was going to garb her the elevator started to move again and the door opened. Amanda started to scream as though he was going to hurt her. Daisy was so happy she ran right off and did not even wake her daughter before she got off. Stanley realized that people saw what he was going to do to Amanda and ran off the elevator and out the door before anyone could say anything. Amanda all worked off got off the elevator and headed straight to the phone both to try to reach Laura one last time before she started for home. Amanda realized that she was the last one in the hotel at the time and the last taxi was leaving. The took off for the taxi before it left and all that was heard was the tone of the phone off the hook.
Hayley, I really like the three people that you picked for your blog. All three seem to have the same personality, one that likes to talk about themselves and not pay any attention to anybody else. I think that you could have used quotes. That might have made the story a little more life like, but overall I got the message that you were trying to send. I really liked the part of the story when they were all in the elevator and Daisy and Amanda went back and forth talking. Nobody paid attention to the little girl, and you did a good job of pointing that out. I think that your ending to the story was appropiate because they were all self centered again and ran out as soon as they were set free. Stanley was himself the whole time. He was drunk and almost beat up on Amanda. Great Job on the story and making the connections to each person.
DeleteHayley, great job on the blog this week! The three people you chose had very similar personalities. They like to only think about themselves and don't really care about others or if they will hurt anyone by their actions. An elevator was a really creative place to have the three people meet. In the part where Amanda and Daisy were having a conversation I liked how you said that no one was paying attention to the little girl. Because of my prior knowledge in the Great Gatsby I knew that Daisy didn't really pay a lot of attention to her own daughter which was very rude I think and un-motherly. The whole scenario was very creative. The part I never really would have thought happening was the ending of the story. I would have never thought to have all of the characters run out of the elevator like they did. Since you mentioned it however I can definitely see them doing that because of how self centered they are. Great job this week with this creative story!
DeleteHayley, I really like you're story about how the characters meet. This is a perfect scenario for their personalities to be shown. Especially the back and forth talking between Daisy and Amanda. This really shows their personalities and how their both very talkative and pushy and only care about himself. This was a very creative and interesting storyline too!
DeleteIt was a warm summer day in New York. Nick Carraway was getting ready to leave for his 2 P.M flight to New Orleans. He had been working in New York but tragedy had stuck his life. His friend Jay Gatsby had died and all of the people he knew were going crazy. He needed to get away and start over. He thought that New Orleans would be perfect. The night scene was hot and job opportunities were booming. As he was on the plane Nick thought to himself “I really hope that this works out for me. I don’t want to get mixed up with the wrong people again.” Once his flight had landed, he headed over to his apartment to unpack his belongings. He was used to living alone, but living in an unknown city was different. After he had freshened up, he decided to go out and try the night scene. At one of the local bars, Nick met a guy named Tom. He was a sitting by himself smoking a cigarette. He seemed very different than the Tom that he knew in New York. He seemed like a quite guy, someone that Nick would get along with. Nick went over and said,” Nice night out there isn’t it?”
ReplyDelete“It sure is,” said Tom is reply. “The name is Tom. And you are?”
“My name is Nick Carraway. I just moved here from New Orleans.”
“What makes you want to move here? I want to get out of here,” said Tom. Tom had just got into a fight with his mother.
She was a very stubborn lady and always got her way. Tom had begun to tell Nick about his situation. He wanted to move out and live on his own, but he cares too much for his sister. However, he is at the point where he can’t take his mother anymore.
“I can understand where you’re coming from,” responded Nick. “When I was in New York, drama seemed to follow me everywhere I turned. I am the type of person to just sit back and not get involved in situations.”
“I am the exact same way! I tend to only worry about the important things and not sweat the small stuff.”
As the two men ordered another round of drinks, a young handsome man came into the bar. His shirt was ripped up and he seemed quite angry. He came over to the bar and sat down next to Nick.
“I need a shot of whiskey,” he said to the bartender. “What are you two looking at?”
“You can leave if you are going to cause a stir here,” said Tom. “This bar doesn’t need some big shot coming in and causing a fight.”
“Listen, I have a name and it is Stanley. I am sorry but I just got into a fight with my wife.”
Delete“You seem like you are very stressed out. Do you need to talk about something?” asked Nick.
“My wife’s sister has just moved in with us and she is crazy. She doesn’t know where to draw the line and she thinks she is this rich, beautiful lady,” said Stanley.
“I know how you feel. My mother is the same way and she thinks that she can just boss me around and I will follow her command. I don’t think so,” added Tom.
“You seem awfully quite over there Nick. Do you need to let something off your chest?” asked Stanley.
“I don’t know. My problems seem pretty minor compared to you guys,” said Nick. “I am not really one to talk about how I am feeling.”
Tom said in reply, “I tend to just let the emotions come out of me when someone makes me angry. I think that it is better to just let it out.”
“I feel the same way Tom,” said Stanley. “I might have to find a better way to deal with it though because my wife is going to have a baby and she doesn’t deserve that kind of stress.”
“I am just worried that I am not going to be able to find a job. I am a writer and really need to start as soon as possible. I am not used to this type of atmosphere,” said Nick.
“There is a job opening at the local newspaper. I could probably get you an interview there,” offered Tom. “After all, you did allow me to blow off some steam.”
“Well I got to get going,” said Stanley. “I have to make up to the wife and see if she will forgive me this time.” “You boys should come over for poker some night. See you around.”
Nick and Tom continued to stay at the bar and talked into the night. They became quite close after that night and Nick was glad that he had found a friend. Nick was able to convince Tom to stay and work things out with is family. Nick turned out to be the hero again.
The End.
Camille, you did a good job this week. One thing I really liked about your blog was that you actually had people talking in your blog. It was really easy to follow and understand who was talking. Also the people that you picked made for a good story. They all seemed to have something in common that they could talk about. This made the story interesting to keep reading. You really showed Tom and nicks personality. You brought out their personalities very nice. Good job this week!
DeleteCamille, I think that this was your best blog yet! I can tell that you put a lot of time and effort into planning it out. The dialogue was fantastic. In my blog I didn't really have people talking back and forth, just a general overview of what people were saying. As I look at your blog I wish that I would have put dialogue into it like you did! It was very easy to follow because I knew exactly who was saying what. All the people you used were easy to talk about because they had a lot in common. The story you told was so interesting and it was very easy to read. You brought everyone's personalities out very well. Your creativity really showed this week! Fantastic job!!!
DeleteIt was a Tuesday afternoon at the shopping mall. Edna Pontellier, Daisy Buchanan, and Blanche were shopping around when they stopped to get something to eat at the food court. Once they got their food they all noticed there was only one table. Edna was seated alone and there were two other seats at the table. Daisy and Blanche decided to sit down with Edna. They started to make small talk. Edna started to talk about her sketches and how she has begun to feel very free. After this Daisy started talking about her good fortune and mostly about herself. Daisy said that is was very easy for her to relate to Edna. She said that she felt trapped in her marriage to her husband Tom. She started talking about how she left a long time fling for Tom because Tom had money. Eventually she grew tired of her relationship because there was no love. She eventually found her love she left for Tom Jay Gatsby. Daisy said she ran away and became very depressed when she learned that Gatsby was killed and it was because of her. She admitted that she was driving the car that's killed Wilson's wife; the man that shot Gatsby. Edna said that she felt very similar in her marriage and was depressed at times as well. She said that she was tired of conforming to society's rules. She was tired of listening to her husband constantly nagging her about the children. She wanted to get away. When she started to feel a connection for a man named Robert. She said that she realized that she wasn't happy in her life and she needed a change. Eventually though she said that Robert realized that his relationship with Edna was not right and that they should no longer be together.
ReplyDeleteBlanche started to talk about how she couldn't relate to their situation. She said she has been really depressed lately, something Edna said she could relate to. Blanche said that she lost Belle Reve and ever since her family died she hadn't been the same. She has been back and forth between men inside of the Flamingo Hotel. She said that she even got involved with a seventeen year old boy at the school she taught at. She ended up getting fired for this. She also admitted to being raped and said that people didn't really believe her when she told them this. Edna and Daisy were very comforting to her during this time when she was telling about her darkest secrets.
Each woman admitted to being depressed at one point or another in their lives. Daisy said she was depressed when she found out Gatsby was killed. Edna said she was depressed when Robert said they should not see each other anymore. Blanche was depressed after she lost Belle Reve and said her depression only continued to get worse when she met Stanley. Each woman said they were thankful for each other and said it was very comforting to get their feelings out in the open.
Rachel, I think that you did a great job of comparing these three women. All of them have suffered depression of some kind and can relate to each other. I felt that your comparsion of Edna and Daisy was very accurate because they both were married, but loved somebody else. Blanche was suffering from other pains in her life, but still something that the other girls could sympithize with. I think that quotes would have been good in this story. If there would be a little bit of dialogue, then the emotion could be felt more. At some parts it seemed that you were the one telling the story, but overall it was a really nice blog this week. You always bring up good comparisions and good topics in your blogs. Keep it up.
DeleteRachel, I think your story was very good this weekend. You really showed how all the characters acted. I liked how you related parts of the book to your story. Also I think the part how Daisy explained the whole situation to the two other woman. One thing that you did really well was you had a separate paragraph for each of the girls. In some way they all related to each other. I think you picked good people to blog about this week!
DeleteThe amusement park was abuzz with many different families on a Saturday afternoon. Many people were looking for an adventure to make their Saturday worthwhile and enjoyable. Some of the riders among this group of people at the park include Blanche, Laura, and Daisy who brought her daughter along. All of these women were in line for the roller coaster at the same time. The roller coaster was very intimidating, involving many loops, twists, and large rises and drops. Daisy was next in line to ride with her daughter with Laura right behind her. Blanche was a few spaces back trying to start a conversation with some of the surrounding males. When the next round of people were called forward to board the ride, Laura was starting to feel nervous about the entire situation and was about to chicken out. She did not think that it would be a good idea for her to get on. When Daisy and her daughter were getting into their own car for the ride, the head of the roller coaster who worked for the amusement park told Daisy that her daughter was not tall enough to board the ride. Daisy did not want to have all of her waiting to be for nothing, so she told her daughter to wait for her until she got off the ride. Laura was very timid about the entire situation and could not board the ride. She was having a slight meltdown with the ride worker because he was trying to convince her to ride while she was refusing. Blanche overheard all of the commotion and noticed how the rides were stopped because of the slight fuss. She jumped to the front of the line and asserted her independence and demanded an explanation as to why everything was stopped. She begins to speak of a ride in Paris that she took and how it was stopped from all of the commotion from the famous people who attend that certain amusement park. She kept distracting the ride worker from his duties of the Laura commotion by speaking to Blanche, which held the ride up even more. Blanche went off with some of her gentleman friends instead of taking the frightful plunge. The worker finally began the ride after the long delay. When the ride came back, Daisy rushed off because she had to meet her husband in order to leave, nearly forgetting her daughter who was with Laura. Laura was still in a state of fear from the ride and needed her mother to be called for comfort.
ReplyDeleteCarli you did an excellent job on your blog! You really allowed me to realize what the personalities of each of these women were without saying it in your blog, especially with Daisy because she didn't even care about her daughter, just what she wanted to do, which was exactly what she did in the book. I also felt you did really well with describing Laura by what her actions were.
DeleteCarli, an amusement park setting is an interesting idea. Your blog presented an interesting concept. Laura’s shyness was shown well by her indecisive actions upon boarding the rollercoaster. If I would have edited anything it would be to have Laura get of riding the ride by staying with Daisy’s daughter, BUT the way you wrote the plot works very well. I liked the concept of the hold up with the ride and how you showed Blanche’s personality by including “gentlemen friends.” Also you were able to capture Daisy’s mindset by all most forgetting her daughter to run back to her husband. Good Job with your creativity!
DeleteIt was a late friday night in Las Vegas. Jay Gatsby was heading to the gambling room in his luxurious hotel. He was in the elevator when someone on the next floor entered the same elevator. He introduced himself to Gatsby as Robert Ratignolle. They shook hands, and then Robert asked him how he was able to afford that beautiful hotel room. Gatsby responded, "I inherited the money from a distant friend of mine. Unfortunately he passed away many years ago. After his death, I decided to work hard for my money to become a wealthy man." Robert then answered,"Oh Im terribly sorry for your loss, what exactly did you work at to become wealthy?" Gatsby then said,"Ive done many thing in my life that Were not legal, but I do not regret it one bit. I gained my wealth with hard work, but there was one thing that I didn't gain with my wealth that I thought would, and that was the love of my life."
ReplyDelete"I know how you feel." ,answered Robert,"I too lost the love of my life when she drowned in the ocean a few weeks ago."
"Robert, how about you and I go out and go crazy! We have nothing to lose, Im Gatsby, I have people watching out for me around every corner. We could do anything!"
Robert said,"I want to live like I did every summer before my lover! With women everywhere around me!"
As they both got off of the elevator they sprinted to the nearest show room and gambling area. Gatsby and Robert approached a young woman that was very beautiful. Gatsby said to her,"Why hello there! Im Jay Gatsby." She replied in a rude manner,"Ive heard of you! Your that bootlegger that everyone's been talking about! " and she walked away. Then Robert approached another young woman. He said to her,"Hello, my name is Robert, Im from the Creole family views, how do you do." He grabbed her hand to kiss it, but immediately she pulled away and saying,"Creole, Ive hears of you, you go around every summer looking for a new beautiful woman to be yours. Well, you can't fool me!",she exclaimed as she walked away. Both Robert and Gatsby met up at a table where they went into deep argument.
"You liar! You told me you weren't going to tell anyone about my life story, about my bootlegging!"
"I didn't!",replied Robert, "Your the one that should be apologizing, you told people about my days each summer with a new woman, and now I cant get any women to go out with me!"
Gatsby then replied,"Why would I ever tell anyone that!?"
Gatsby stalked away from Robert that night, and Robert sat at the bar thinking about his life will be in the future.
Emma, I really liked your situation between Gatsby and Robert. I could honestly picture someone like Gatsby in a large, grand casino gambling, but I never thought of Robert as that type of person. Las Vegas is a good choice for a setting as well. I found the story very funny, and I picture that would be how it would go for those to. I could imagine both Robert and Gatsby becoming good friends. You should be careful, however, to make sure you capitalize proper words, like "Friday". Also, Robert's last name is "Lebrun", and not "Ratignolle". Other those tiny things, you blog was very well written.
DeleteEmma, great setting for your interactions between characters. Las Vegas is the perfect place for Gatsby and Robert to have in common. They both share common experiences with loss and interest in women. They also are both business men who “have nothing to lose.” Within your blog you clearly brought up Gatsby’s and Robert’s life style and attitudes. I believe you did a good job with that. My only concern is that you only used two characters instead of three. Other than that your blog worked perfectly.
DeleteStanley and Amanda are in a grocery store. Amanda has many items in her cart, while Stanley has just a few. Amanda was trying to find where the milk was, and she saw that Stanley had some. Amanda asked Stanley, “Excuse me sir, do you know where I can find that milk.” Stanley replies “Yeah just go forward a couple aisles and then take a left.”
ReplyDelete“Thanks” says Amanda. She started to walk that way and then turned back to Stanley. “Excuse me sir what is your name,” she asked.
“The names Stanley, now I have to go so see you later maybe,” replied Stanley.
All of a sudden Amanda starts yelling “Stanley is such a beautiful name I have a cousin named Stanley and I love him dearly more than anything in the world. I haven’t seen him in a while though; some people say he fled for Europe when his wife left him, some other people say he lives alone and doesn’t come out of his house. Now about this milk I love milk I drink it with almost anything whether its pizza, steak, spaghetti, maybe some roast beef. What about you do you like milk? I think it’s the most amazing thing in the world but you better not drink too much or else you’ll get sick and who likes to get sick. Surely I would never like to be sick. You know this one time I had too much milk and I had to go to the hospital because I was so sick.”
“O will you just shut up!” replies Stanley as he picks stuff out of her cart and starts throwing it everywhere. “Listen I don’t care about your stupid milk problems, now go away and leave me alone!” Stanley is totally irate with this woman that he doesn’t even know and never wants to see again.
Amanda says “Listen do not talk to me that way we all have the freedom of speech as clarified in the very first amendment of the United States! I really don’t like it when people tell me to shut up because the very first amendment is all about freedom of speech and I am subject to say whatever I want too.”
“All right that’s it!” Yells Stanley as he knocks over Amanda’s cart and Amanda falls backwards in distress. Stanley and Amanda finally walk away. Adele Ratignolle and her children witnessed the whole thing.
“You should always treat people with respect.” Adele said to one of her children. “Because if you respect them, then they will respect you and tell everyone that you are such are a nice person.”
One of Adele’s children asks her, “Mommy would you ever treat us that way.”
Adele replies, “Absolutely not I love you kids more than anything and I would hate to see you that way.”
The Ratignolle’s enjoy the moment as Stanley comes walking toward them and says, “Get out of my way lady!”
Stanley heads for the door and the Ratignolle’s enjoy a great laugh as they continue on their shopping expedition.
The end.
Andrew, I thought your story was hilarious! I love how you depicted both Amanda and Stanley. Amanda was very chatty, and was obviously irritating Stanley. I could honestly picture the situation you wrote as I read it, and it seemed as something that would happen if those to ever actually met in real life. Amanda is just one of those people that would talk to anyone, even if they pushed her away and ignored her. I also like how Amanda was not directly involved in the argument, but was able dictate the mood of the situation. Good job!
DeleteAndrew,
DeleteI think that you depicted Amanda very well! I give you a lot of credit for chosing the characters you did, I never would have brought a Awakening character into my story! You did a very good job portraying your characters. I can also imagine Adele giving that sort of advice to her children. Good job this week!
It was a cold, dreary day in the state of Pennsylvania. Everyone had nothing to do; it was too cold and bitter to go outside. So when in doubt, go to the mall! A group of three girls decided to go to the local mall. This group of girls included Laura, Blanche, and Daisy. Daisy and Blanche kept up with the latest styles. Both Daisy and Blanche wore outlandish outfits that contained bright colors. Daisy wore a fashionable dress with amazing red shoes. Blanche wore a neon colored shirt with zebra printed shoes, along with a large hat. On the other hand, Laura wore a simple little white dress with cute brown sandals. All of these girls are shoe fanatics. Who knows what is in store?
ReplyDeleteLaura, Blanche, and Daisy started their shopping trip by stopping at a few stores. Daisy bought a medium length dress with matching shoes. Blanche purchased a tight, short dress that is guaranteed to catch young men’s eyes, along with a pair of stiletto heels. Laura bought nothing. After their first purchases they all took a break for a nice lunch at a Italian restaurant.
Once seated in their private room, as requested by Laura, a conversation arose. “Laura, why haven’t you bought anything?” said Daisy “Well I….” Laura is interrupted by Blanche. “Why honey you are too modest, too modest you hear. You are a lovely young lady, but you are much too quiet. Oh but you are such a doll.” After waiting a few minutes for a response from Laura, Daisy and Blanche broke into their own conversation about gentlemen callers, education, and past loves. After lunch all three girls went back to the mall to continue their shopping. A new bond between Daisy and Blanche has formed leaving Laura basically in the background. Daisy and Blanche’s new friendship was about to be tested. Laura, Blanche, and Daisy all entered the best shoe store in the entire mall. Everyone was excited and ready to shop. All three girls wore the same shoe size. Blanche excitedly said to Daisy “looks at all these marvelous pair of shoes!” Daisy in reply said “There is nothing better to attract gentlemen callers than a great pair of kickers.” Daisy and Blanche tried on every fashionable shoe in the store, while Laura patiently and quietly looked at each one and moved on. Then came a moment of hostility. In this store was the greatest shoe every seen by any of the three friends. This pair of shoes was a high heel covered with purple and pink glitter with an all rhinestone heel. In the eyes of Daisy and Blanche this pair of shoes had a light from heaven shining down on them. Searching frantically for this pair of shoe in their size, the friends realize there is only one pair left in the correct size. Daisy and Blanche both look at each other. “Oh no! There is only one pair left!” All of a sudden the look of desire and aggressiveness filled both Blanche’s and Daisy’s eyes. Before one could blink an eye these two girls were in a heated argument over the shoes. This argument caught the manager’s attention which took the shoes away from the girls and escorted them out of the store. Blanche and Daisy pleaded the store clerk to allow them back in but security guards were put in charge of keeping them out. Meanwhile Laura is left alone in the store. Laura saw the shoes that Daisy and Blanche were fighting over a stood with a gaze. Laura tried on the shoes and was stunned by how amazing they looked on her. So Laura purchased the shoes, and gained confidence in her look. Laura immediately put her new shoes on and left the store to find Daisy and Blanche. Laura found Daisy and Blanche sulking on a bench nearby. As Laura walks by there is a new attitude in her step. Daisy and Blanche all of a sudden talked to Laura and hung out with her all day long.
Laura’s quiet and sneaky life style allowed her to be the ultimate shopper of the day. That very night Laura had gentlemen callers line up at her doorstep. Daisy and Blanche disgusted by Laura’s popularity went out t the bar for some therapeutic cocktails.
Marla, you did really good on your blog this week! I really thought you did good in describing each of these characters without writing their characteristic. You did that through their conversations they had between eachother. Going to the mll was also a good place to set the theme of their conversations also!
DeleteMarla, I think this blog represents the personalities of the characters (and yourself) very. I started laughing your long middle paragraph, especially when you said a light from heaven was shining down on the shoes. All Blanche and Daisy cared about was themselves, and their selfishness did not pay off in the end. I can totally picture all three of those characters, especially Daisy and Blanche, at a mall. I can also see them wearing the clothes and shoes you described. Overall, a good job on your blog and good job describing each shoe style for me.
DeleteIt was a dreary, rainy, evening in New Orleans. The streets were filled with stifling fog that clung to the clothes of pedestrians. Jay Gatsby, his hat drown low over his eyes, slinked through the shadows and crowds and into a small café on the corner. Inside, the café was dimly lit and smelled of cigar smoke. Men and women were tucked into shabby booths, nursing cups of coffee and bowls of soup.
ReplyDeleteGatsby shuffled to the counter, where a woman and a man were seated side by side. He sat a few seats below them and ordered a black coffee. Leaning back, he lit one of his expensive cigars and perked his ears to the conversation that was taking place before him.
“What’s wrong with you? Don’t you want to dance?” The man demanded, gripping the woman’s thin arm. His voice was heavily accented and his hands were calloused and strong. The woman winced in pain and whimpered, but she did not respond, at least not that Gatsby could hear.
The man leapt off his barstool and drug the woman with him. He was laughing, as if the whole thing was just a large joke, but the woman did not looked amused. Gatsby rose, his fist clenched. He hated to see that sort of brutality, especially given to a woman.
Gatsby approached the man, who was forcing the woman to dance. He rested his hand on his shoulder and pulled him away. “I don’t think she wants to dance old sport.”
The man whirled around, baring his teeth. “What’s the big idea, pal?”
Gatsby smiled, slightly amused. “I don’t think she wants to dance with you old sport. Do you want to dance with him—“ Gatsby paused as he realized he did not know the woman’s name.
“Laura,” the woman choked, her voice barely audible. “I—I—oh I think I’m ill.” And she did indeed look ill. Laura’s skin was ghostly white and her hands appeared to be shaking. The man did not release her from his grip, however.
“You listen here, big shot. You may have some money, but that doesn’t give you the right to involve yourself in my affairs.” The man growled, sticking a finger in Gatsby’s face.
“Mister—“
“Stanley,” The man snapped.
“Stanley,” Gatsby said, “I don’t think Laura likes you very much.” Gatsby tapped out his cigar in a nearby ash tray. He reached into his breast pocket to retrieve another. As he brought it to his lips Stanley lashed out and knocked it to the floor.
“This isn’t one of your fancy hotels, this here is for normal people!” Stanley shouted. He dropped Laura’s hands, forgetting her entirely. Laura scampered away to the safety of the counter.
Anger flared up inside of Gatsby. He reached out and grabbed Stanley by the collar, lifting his muscular frame from the floor. “You should learn some respect, Stanley.” Gatsby threw Stanley backwards. The other man tumbled over tables and sent dishes and glasses crashing to the ground where they shattered.
Gatsby turned his attention back to Laura, who looked like she was about to faint. He ordered her a tonic soda and sat down beside her.
“Are you alright Miss Laura?” He asked, pushing the icy drink toward her when it arrived.
Laura nodded his frail head quickly. She drank the tonic soda, nearly dropping the glass when she returned it to the countertop. Gatsby rested his hand on hers, surprised at how cold they were.
“You don’t need to be afraid of me, Miss Laura. You don’t have to be afraid of that man, Stanley, either. He won’t bother you anymore.” Gatsby told her, glancing at Stanley on the floor. A few people attempted to help him, but he shoved them away, cursing.
“Thank you,” Laura breathed, giving Gatsby a small smile.
“You’re very welcome.” Gatsby replied.
First off, hooray for undead Gatsby. That out of the way, I think putting Laura's weak nature with Stanley's violent one was unique. Although to be honest, I have some doubts that Stanley would really get beaten up by Gatsby. I also really do not feel that Gatsby could really become angry, seeing that he was always calm in the novel. However, other than that he does seem right with his personality.
DeleteMaddie, I really, really enjoyed your scene. You do know how much I love your stories! You really captured Stanley's tough guy act. I also thought of him as someone who is big and tough at first, but once someone stands up to him, he folds. Also, I think that Laura being the woman that Stanley is taking advantage of is something that could actually happen. She would never have the strength to stand up to him, and I think that you showed Gatsby's sense of chivalry very well. I do think that Laura would feel the same way that she felt about Jim towards Gatsby very easily, in the way of falling into easy conversation and trust that she did before. Overall, really great job!
DeleteIt’s late in the evening in the city that never sleeps. In an old alleyway, a family lives in a compact apartment, where the only way in or out is through a fire escape landing. Escape, Tom thought himself, was very appropriate for how things turned out in that house. House, house would not be an appropriate name for that cramped living space, Tom thought to himself.
ReplyDeleteHe muttered under his breath, “Home is where the heart is, but there, there was never my home.” He pulls out a cigarette and lights it. Tom never pictured his travels ever leading him back the New York. It was too painful for him to think how he left Laura there with his witch of a mother. He left her in pieces; he is responsible for blowing out her candle and leaving her in an eternity of darkness.
But that is not why he was there. Across the street, there was a dancehall, and he was there for business and business alone. He paced up and down the sidewalk, until he threw his cigarette onto the ground and crushed it with his foot. Tom never was much of a dancer, but his new boss insisted on meeting in a public place, and he felt most comfortable in New York.
Tom had never actually met Mr. Wolfshiem before, but he knew that his new boss was someone you would never want to cross paths with. He looked at his watch; it was nearly nine, as Tom entered that dancehall in search of Wolfshiem.
The room was filled with people, all dressed in masquerade style. A large crystal ball illuminated the room, reflecting a prism of colors. The glass made him think of his sister, but Tom knew this life he has chosen does not include the luxury of friends or family.
A beautiful woman approached Tom. She was young, but not young enough to be called “girl”. The woman was decked out in costume jewelry with a rhinestone tiara. She asked, “Are you the gentleman I’ve been expecting? I thought you would be dressed in a little proper attire, but work clothes will suffice just this one time, I suppose.”
Tom replied, “Unless you know a man by the name of Wolfshiem, I do not believe I have any business with you mam.” With confusion on her face, she continued, “Oh, don’t try to play games with me sir! It’s me, Blanche. I was expecting you to be a gentleman to hold me and dance with me all night long, without getting too familiar with me, for I’m the old-fashioned type. You may escort me to my hotel, and possibly kiss my hand goodnight, but I am an older girl, and therefore old-fashioned.”
“If you were expecting me Blanche, what is my name?” asked Tom. He was not in the mood to play any role for anyone but Mr. Wolfshiem. He tensed up and searched the room for an unfamiliar face that could possibly make sense of why this woman was talking to him.
Blanche pondered a moment, and said, “Name? Why young man, you never left me with one. Oh, don’t you remember? We met at the music hall. You said that a beautiful woman such as me should not go out into the city night without a gentleman to cradle my arm and chaperone me back to my hotel. We walked and talked for hours until you left me at my door, with a gentle kiss on my gloved hand with promises to see me tonight.”
Tom looked at her in bewilderment. “You are truly mistaken me with what sounds like a true gentleman. I am here to meet my employer, not you. My name is Tom, and I am here to see a man by the name of Wolfshiem, and if you cannot help me, I bid you good night.”
Blanche looked at Tom then remembered an older gentleman told her a man by the name of Tom would be arriving. “Yes! Then you were expecting me. Well not me, but the man you are looking for left me with this missive to deliver to you.”
She handed Tom the note. It said: “I apologize on my absence, but business has called me away to Chicago. My shipment will be in at the docks this coming Friday. Deliver them to the supplier at night, and do not attract any attention on yourself. Signed, Wolfshiem”.
Tom looked up, and Blanche was gone. “What have I gotten myself into?”
I think you captured Tom's uncaring nature very well. Wolfsheim is a character I forgot about, although hearing him be mentioned reminded me of him. Interesting choice by making him lack an actual appearance, but his note does seem like something that he would leave. I think you had Blanche right to a point, she is pushy toward Tom like she would be, but I think she would be more persistent and want more out of Tom. I like the ending too, ominous and leave a reader wanting more.
DeleteMaria, I think that you did a good job of capturing the way that Blanche tends to lie about different things, like knowing Tom already. She reacted to him in the way that she reacted to Mitch, which alludes to her slight craziness. Even though Wolfshiem was not actually in the scene, you captured his lawlessness very well. You could see that what he was doing was most likely illegal, and that Tom had decided to help him in order to receive the money that he had always dreamed of having, similar to Gatsby. Good job with your scene
DeleteA bar in Mexico, far from the most glamourous place in the world, yet Tom Wingfield still found most of his time there. by the end of the night, empty bottles and scraps of paper he scribbled on whatever he could think of surrounded his place at the counter. This rather pitiful appearance built barriers between Tom and other patrons of the bar. However, when someone new entered the fray, his first choice was to sit by Tom. Tom notices the man and puzzled by the action replies in a low voice, "What do you want?"
ReplyDeleteThe man responds, "Oh, nothing, just here for a drink."
Tom now looks at his new neighbor and notices his out of place appearance. With this information, he continues, "Really, a high class person like you drinking with the filth down here, hardly believe it."
The man replies, "Fine you caught me, I'm Robert Ratignolle..."
Tom intervenes, "So your that guy that came here and became rich overnight with whatever it is you do."
Robert feels the tension and envy in Tom's voice, and with a smug look say, "So you do know me."
Tom explains, "I hear a lot of things in this bar, of other people's success and failure. Pitiful, all of it."
Robert looks at Tom's scattered papers and arrogantly replies, "You seem jealous."
Tom, now actually caring, glares Robert in the eyes and says, "Why shouldn't I be? I left my family behind and went where life took me and I ended up here and miserable, then people like you always show up and make a name for themselves without even trying!"
Robert thinks to himself for a moment, the breaks the silence, "I bet you are still wondering why I am here, well I saw a very attractive woman enter this building and figured i would follow her. Its the woman behind me and to the right, know who she is?"
Tom looks back and sees who Robert is talking about, sensing that he really does not know who she is decides to lie, "I believe her name is Blanche, says she doesn't drink much but she is in here often. I don't know anything else about her." An attempt to make Robert leave him alone.
Robert hastily asks, "Do you think she would be into me?" Tom looks at Robert and nods yes. Seizing the opportunity, Robert bounds off.
The bartender had been in front of the two for the entire conversation, looking the complete opposite direction. When Robert left he said in a relaxed voice without turning around, "You know, its not nice to leave out important details."
Tom looks back at the bartender and replies, "Its his fault for not knowing who Blanche is, she carried her infamy and lies all the way here, and don't tell me how to live my life, I hated when my mother did that." Tom watches Robert and Blanche, seeing that Blanche switched to flirting with the new face. He watches the two leave then returns to his drink.
The bartender puts the final word in with the same relaxed voice, "You know Tom, if alcohol doesn't kill you, then your envy of other people's success where you failed will. I really don't think you tried very hard." Then the bartender leaves to care for other customers and leave Tom alone, with his drink and something to think about.
Tyler, you wrote your blog very well this week. You have an awesome vocabulary! I really enjoyed how the story started out. I enjoyed the sentence where you said, "..Don't tell me how to live my life, I hated when my mother did that." It gives us yet another reminder of who Tom is. Your last paragraph is definitely my favorite, saying the envy of other's people's success will kill him. Good blog!
DeleteA bar in Mexico is a great place for these characters. Tom seems to really have made his dream of getting away from his mom, I doubt she would find him there. Tom, Robert, and Blanche act exactly how I would imagine them too. Tom also gets a wake up call from the bartender at the end, which was a nice twist, and shows that Tom never did more than he had to, and spent a lot of time feeling sorry for himself.
DeleteIt was late afternoon when. Daisy entered the coffee shop. She nearly left when she saw how crowded it was, but decided against it. This was the only coffee shop for blocks, and she was not going to walk that far for one cup of coffee. Once she got her coffee, she looked for an open table. One of the only available seats was at a table with a lost looking man and a woman who was obviously once quite beautiful. Well, she wasn't going to stand, so she approached the table.
ReplyDelete"Hello, would you mind if I sat here? There seem to be no other tables."
The woman turned and said, "Why of course! Tom and I are doing the exact same thing. This right now is the first time I've met him, but it is quite crowded so just take a seat right here. I personally have always relied on the kindness of strangers. By the way, my name is Blanche. What's yours?"
"Daisy."
Blanche responded exuberantly, "Well isn't that a fine name! Perfect for someone as pretty as you. Isn't that right, Tom?"
Tom looked up as if he had only now noticed the addition to their group. "What? Oh yeah, sure," he responded, immediately looking back down into his coffee.
Blanche began chatting animatedly on seemingly random topics, and Daisy and Tom looked at her and nodded when it seemed appropriate. However, when the topic turned to ceramic figures, Tom's face went white. Blanche notices immediately and wondered what was wrong, but it was Daisy who had the gall to simply ask him, "What up with you? Once Blanche here started talking about those figures, you went white as a ghost!"
Tom looked around as if looking to see if he would be overheard, then leaned in to whisper to them, " My sister Laura used to own an entire collection of glass figurines. They seemed to be the only things in life to bring her joy. It's just that I haven't seen her in a long time that I reacted that way. I apologize if I made you women worry."
While Blanche just nodded and was about to go back to her endless chatter, Daisy didn't have the inclination to be as polite. Instead, she said one word. "Why?"
Blanche immediately became offended by her ride question and said, "I haven't seen my sister in a long time, but that isn't my fault or hers! Maybe he's going to see her soon, like I am with my sister and her husband."
Tom looked bewildered by this change of topics, but he was not offended. Instead, all that he said was, "When I left my mother and sister, it was not on the best of terms. I feel like it would be impossible for me now."
Daisy seemed confused by this, saying "I've never really had close relatives, only cousins. I don't really know how you would be feeling, and I'm sorry. However, I must be going. My husband and daughter are waiting for me. Good day." She got up immediately and walked out of the cafe.
Blanche looked at the time. "Oh!" she exclaimed. "I'll be late for my transport down to New Orleans if I don't get going. Thank you for the company, Tom. It was very nice meeting you."
Tom watched them go and thought about how he hoped that Blanche and her sister would get along again after not seeing each other for all these years. He, too, got up and left.
Tori, you described atom very well in this blog. I liked what you did at the beginning when you made Tom seem like he didn't care about the conversation. This was exactly how his personality was. I also could hear Blanche's voice in my head as I read her lines. I thought that it was really cool that I could actually hear her own voice in my head. I also enjoyed how you incorporated Laura into your story through another character. Blanche was a character that liked to talk a lot, but would also get mad if she thought you were insulting her. Good job on your blog this week Tori.
DeleteTori, your blog is so good this week! Showing Tom's uncaring personality right from the beginning was very good. Also including that Daisy would say just about anything to someone, even if it was offensive, was a good way to show her personality. Blanche was definitely the most talkative, both in the story and in your blog. Another good job of showing personality. You did a very good job of pulling all of their personalities together in this story!
DeleteTori, I like the characters that you used! I think that you captured the characters very well. I think the place you chose for their meeting was also very good. Could imagine Tom sulking in a coffee place smoking a cigerrette and writing poetry. Of course Blanche would take advantage of a sulking young man...(: Poor Tom probably thought those two were worse than his mother!

ReplyDeleteWhile walking around town, Laura notices the gray clouds accumulating above her head. Just shortly after, the rain begins coming down. Quickly, Laura runs into the closest diner and notices a few tables occupied. While making her way to an empty table, she tries to look towards the floor as to not make eye contact with anyone. “Well good morning, beautiful!” says the waitress. “Take a seat anywhere. Oh dear, you look like you got caught in the storm! Would you like a dry towel to wipe yourself off?” Laura responds, under her breath, “Why yes please.” As she sits down, her mother’s voice is echoing in her head. “Laura, you’re gonna catch a cold being outside when it’s raining! Oh Laura, how many times do I have to tell you to always wear your rain boots and bring an umbrella even if there is the slightest gray cloud?” While all of this is going on in her head, the waitress has been trying to hand her the towel. “Darling, your towel?” Laura responds, “Oh thank you.”
ReplyDeleteWhile wiping her arms and dabbing her hair, she notices a man sitting in the corner, surrounded by a few people. He looks very wealthy, and she overhears that he will be taking the bill for all of the people at his table. One of the woman states, “Why, Gatsby, first you entertain us all evening at your glorious home and now you treat us to breakfast! What a gentleman.” Laura remembers hearing the name Gatsby before, and then recalls the lecture her mother had given her about him being a wealthy man who doesn’t talk much, but sure can get himself in some trouble. It was clear he wasn’t very talkative by looking at him with his group of friends. Everyone else was enveloped in conversation while Gatsby just sat back and soaked it all in.
After sipping her coffee and waiting for a refill, a beautiful woman walks in and notices Laura sitting alone. She walks right over to her and introduces herself. “Well hello there, my name is Blanche. You are?” Laura responds with a simple, “Laura” as her cheeks redden with nervousness. Blanche sits down and snaps her fingers for the waitress. “Well, if I could just get a cup of coffee here, that rain sure can put a chill over the body!” Laura is sitting there, just staring at her cup, while Blanche pretty much tells her all about her past. “Why yes, it sure was tragic when I lost my husband. I got all my belongings in one lousy old trunk out at my sister’s place.” Laura simply nods. Blanche states, “After many men after my loss, I seem to have found the one. He is actually my brother-in-law’s friend, why he’s a doctor!” Blanche continues to ramble on and on about herself, while Laura still stares at her coffee, sipping occasionally and nodding every now and again, when she notices Gatsby getting up to leave. He comes strolling over to their table when he winks at Blanche, and tips his hat to Laura, throwing down a twenty dollar bill and then walking away.
Well done on your blog Nicole! I got a great view of Laura, Blanche and Gatsby. It was an interesting story to read, and made a great blog. I saw how Laura was shy and retiring. Blanch was a bit too much outgoing and went after Gatsby, and then we see that Gatsby loves to appear rich with him just throwing down money and walking away. These characters went great together, and made for a well done and interesting blog.
DeleteNicole, I found your blog to be pretty much perfect this week. I got so into the entire story you told! Not only did you create a good situation with the characters and bring them together in an appropriate setting, but the dialogue that the characters had with each other and the waitress described their personalities without simply stating their personalities exactly. The only improvement I would consider would be to continue the story a bit longer to keep the mystery. Very good job!
Deleteg in New York City, and it is snowing like mad. Three strangers are stuck in a taxi, in the middle of traffic, behind a wreck between two tractor trailers. These three individuals are not in the best of moods. They were all arguing and fighting. The cab driver is getting fed up with all the talk, and is about to kick everyone out of the car. The driver begins to analyze all the people one by one, to see which one would get the boot first. "First," thinks the cab driver, "there is Amanda". "She is the loudest of the bunch. From the first moment she got in the can, she was telling me about her children." Amanda started off the ride with, "hello cab driver! Make this fast, because my children cannot take care of themselves!" The cab driver asked how old the children were, and when he heard they were both well out of high school he was confused. He said "now, they seem old enough. Why would they need taken care of?" Amanda was upset, and insisting that the driver did not know how to run a good family, she told him, "back in blue mountain, our parents always..." The can driver started to block her out and ignore her. He was relieved when he saw the next person he had to pick up. It was a well respectable, younger looking man. He was dressed in a nice suit, and looked extremely wealthy. When he got in however, the cab driver quickly realized he had picked up something he would regret. He asked the man has name, and the man replied "Gatsby." The cab driver wanted a conversation and asked Gatsby how he was doing. Gatsby replied, "HORRIBLE! I do not know if I can stand this any longer." The cab driver is worried now, and wants to end the conversation as quickly as possible. He says "it can not be that bad, it will turn out ok. Do not worry about it." Gatsby is crying now, and screaming "Daisy! Daisy!" The can driver feels two things. The first is wondering who Daisy is, the second is how long Gatsby will cry, and the third thing he feels is thankfulness. He is thankful that he does not have to hear the continual Blue Mountain story anymore, because it is drowned out. His next stop was at a bowling alley. He pulled up to the curb, and found a Polish looking man, carrying his bowling bag. He got in, and was polite to the cab driver. "How are you today can driver?" The driver replied, "I was doing fine until I picked up these nut-cases." Stanley laughed, and was making fun on Gatsby for crying. "A grown man cannot cry! What are you? A little girl?" Gatsby was further upset by this, and told this man to be quiet, as "pollacks cannot feel feelings." This made the man mad, and he yelled "My name is Stanley! I am a proud native born american!" Right about now, the cab driver was driving as fast as possible to get the drive over with. He was dismayed when he saw a wreck ahead, and had to stop. A police man walked up and said, "sorry sir, but we are
ReplyDeletegoing to be here a while." As the policeman surveyed the scene in the back seats of the taxi, he laughed and told the driver "good luck."
DeleteThis led the cab driver to go crazy. He was sitting there with three people all angry and yelling at him or each other, or both. Amanda is mad because he cannot go faster, and insists that the transportation in Blue Mountain is better. Gatsby is further angering Stanley, who is fed up with the Polish jokes. The driver was about to just close his eyes and rest, but that idea was erased when Stanley's fist connected with Gatsby's face. Gatsby screamed something about Daisy as he was knocked out, and Amanda seemed not to notice. She was talking about a story where she had so many 'gentlemen callers' visit her. Stanley was really mad now, and was screaming at Amanda. The cab driver called the policemen over, and had to drag Stanley out of the car. The situation got under control, and the crash was cleared. Unfortunately for the cab driver, Amanda forgot to pay him, Gatsby was unconscious, and Stanley was arrested for assault. The driver never got paid.
The blog is supposed to start off: "It was morning" It was too long and blogspot cut it off to try to make it fit.
DeleteJess, I like the spin that you put on your blog. I find it very neat and commend you for using the point of view of the cab driver as your main character. I think that you chose some very important characters and had different lines that we all know they would speak of. You captured their main concerns and brought out their true identities in a very good way with their behavior around others. The only suggestion I would have would be to expand some of their dialogue on other concerns that the characters had, possibly with a recognition of Gatsby and therefore leading to his parties. Otherwise, very well done!
DeleteJess, I really enjoyed reading your blog this week! You put a funny turn to it but also captured everything that was necessary. I liked how you put the cab driver as the many character and had him analyze the others. It was great how you told about how Amanda talked the whole time. Gatsby was crying over Daisy. And Stanley was kind of making fun of Gatsby. This is exactly how I would imagine these three. Good job!
DeleteJess, I enjoyed your blog because you put some humor into it. It was very unique how you made it from the can drivers point of view. This really helps us to really see their personalities from someone else's point of view and not one of theirs. It is important that we are it from this perspective. Point of view is more important than we think it is and it really is important to grasping to concept of the situation.
DeleteIt is a nice, sunny, Sunday afternoon. Blanche is sitting in the new coffee shop that just opened around the corner. As she walks in, she cheerfully greets the waitress and starts to make small talk with her. Laura comes wandering in after she skipped class. There is not many people in the shop. Blanche and the waitress here bell ring on the door and immediately glance over to see who is arriving.
ReplyDeleteWhen Blanche sees the woman walk in she yells. "Hello! What's your name?" Laura quietly replies, "Laura." Blanche tells her to sit down and have a cup of coffee with her. Laura awkwardly accepts and sits down. She sips on her coffee while Blanche continues to talk to the waitress. After a few minutes of Blanche telling Laura her life story, another man walks in looking rather high class.
Blanche greets him as well. He introduces himself to the two ladies as Tom. It is obvious that he is somewhat wealthy; he has a nice shirt on and dress pants. Laura is still sitting there shyly and not speaking. As it starts to get later, Blanche and Tom are still making small talk. Tom starts to get up and says he has to leave. He states, "Would you ladies like me to pay for your food?" Laura responds with a simple, "No thanks." Tom insists and leaves some money on the table. Laura and Blanche soon after walk out together. Blanche says to her, "That was a lovely meal! We should get together again soon!" Laura says "Okay" and then starts on her way home.
Larissa, I think that you captured the essence of the characters well. Blanche always seemed to be talking even though the things that she talked about never seemed to have been of importance. Tom was a character who liked to flaunt his wealth around and how much better he was than everyone else, and you portrayed that part well whenever he offered to pay for Laura and Blanche's meals. Laura was always very quiet and timid, always agreeing to everything and not saying much in any of the conversations.
DeleteThe three characters I chose is Blanche, Amanda, and Daisy. The reason I chose these characters is because all three of them are very opinionated and always need to be right. The place that they met was at coffee shop in New York City. They all went into the coffee shop looking to get away from all their awful problems. First, Blanche came in and sat in the same booth as Amanda. They started discussing their lives with each other and found out that they've had the same troubles. Amanda's children left her, Blanche gets arrested and loses everything. Both of then are going through a hard time. Daisy, who is in the booth behind them, overhears them and decides to join in their conversation. She tells then about how she had an affair with a man named Gatsby, and then he got murdered and she went away with her husband, leaving the love of her life behind and trying to completely forget about Gatsby. Amanda told her that she felt the same and she knows what its like being left behind. Blanche knew what it was like to lose everything and to be looked at as different. Daisy joked about how life isn't perfect and they should just stick together and go through life differently, like nothing has ever happened and forget their troubles. All three girls shared a special bond, they tried to cheer each other up. They shared the bond of sadness. They laughed and they cried. Since they were so much alike, they got along and realized that they might be able to turn their life around and try to do better in the world.
ReplyDeleteLeah, I like that you stated how opinionated these three characters were. I think that since they were the same in that way, they would make good friends as well. Or they would get into fights a lot because of their different views on things. I do, however wish that you would have used real dialogue in your blog, I would have liked to hear what each character had to say about their lives personally instead of you having just generalized it.
DeleteLeah, you did a good job with your blog. In mine, I picked characters that were completely different. Yours were all alike in some way. They all are very opinionated and had many problems of there own. I do think that they would get along and share a common bond in real life. Dialogue would have made this seem more realistic, but good job!
DeleteThrough the dim lights, Daisy spots an open stool at the bar and walks over to it. As she comes closer, she spots a man next to the empty chair and a woman beside him. The woman looked up as she walked over, but once eye contact was made she timidly looks back down to the floor. As Daisy takes her seat, the man turns toward her and realizing she is pretty, greets her "Hello, I'm Stanley who might you be?" "Daisy," she answers through a coy smile. "I haven't seen you around," Stanley slurrs his words as he is saying them. Daisy answers him in a quiet voice, the kind of voice that you want to lean closer to hear. As the night goes on, Stanley and Daisy continue talking, Stanley making arrogant comments and Daisy flirting with him anyone, oblivious to how he acts. The woman beside Stanley stands up to leave and Daisy takes this chance to say "Excuse me, miss, but your dress is rather pretty. I've been admiring it all night." Daisy then introduces herself and sticks her hand out. The woman starts to stutter "Uh, thank you. I'm..I'm Laur-" but was not able to finish her sentence because as she stuck her hand out to meet Daisy's, she knocked Stanley's drink over into his lap. Stanley angrily stands up shouting, "goddamnit, you crippled people are good for nothing!" and strikes her across the face before leaving. Laura fell to the ground, shocked and Daisy began to weep.
