Presentation - Collection 14 & 15: Jess and Hayley; Maddie and Nicole

Part 1:  Post your feedback to the two-day presentation given by Hayley and Jess this past week. Which of the authors/poets did you find  most interesting and why?  How does their work (ideas, style, diction) illustrate the theme of this collection "Shadows of the Past?"   What part of the presentation was most beneficial to you?  What would you do differently if you were presenting this collection?   How many times did Faulkner use the word "rose" to mean the type of flower?  How did he use the word "rose" throughout the story, "A Rose for Emily?"

Part 2:  Post your feedback to the two-day presentation given by Maddie and Nicole.  Which authors did you enjoy the most?  What is the most important lesson, idea, or concept you learned from this presentation?  Most especially, what do you respect about "The Harlem Renaissance"?  How has this period of time affected the arts even today for those who started the movement?

  1. This week my group was one of the one to present. I am very glad to have it out of the way. The second group is the ideal group I think. This is because there is a group in front that you can see what you need to do and it's early enough that you still have the time to sit back relax and watch the other presentations. I thought that Jess and I did good during ours. Even though our power points were not that long I don't feel like they were boring. We tried to put a lot of videos so we were not just up there talking the whole time. I thought that collection we had was interesting. I really thought the story "A Rose for Emily" was really good. When working on the presentation we split up the work load very well. We both didn't have to much. Each of us made a PowerPoint and we both helped on the hand out and worksheet. This presentation helped me realize how important it is to be able to work in groups. Group work is something that many jobs will use. Being able to get along with people is very important. Overall I had a good time working on my presentation with Jess.

Maddie and Nicole did a good job on their presentation this week. The collection they had was very interesting. The problems that blacks faced during that time period was horrible. Nicole and Maddie really knew their material and how to get the whole class involved. My favorite part of the presentation was when they showed us the music videos. The music during this time was some of the best that has ever been composed. Another thing they did was they talked about the material in the book and also a lot about the background information of the time period. Learning about this time period I find very interesting. The worksheet that they had for us went over everything they talked about. That was very useful in understanding the whole collection. One thing that I would change about the presentation was when they gave out the worksheet. They should of have it to us the first day and we could of worked on it through the whole presentation. Other then that I thought they did an excellent job!

    1. Hayley, great job on your presentation! I feel as though you really learned a lot by doing it! I think that group presentations are a very good thing to experience. In our lives, especially when we go off to university, we will need to present different things. It is important to get good experience with it now so we can be good with it in the future! I also agree that Maddie and Nicole did a great job with their presenting! Their presentation was extremely informative and I learned a lot about the Harlem Renaissance! Great job Hayley!

    2. Hayley, I think that you did a great job critiquing you presentation. You have a good point when you talked about being second and the advantages of that. I liked that you mentioned that the PowerPoint was shorter, but you defiantly made up for that with the videos that you provided. It seemed that you and Jess worked well together and split up the work very evenly. I thought that your critque about Nicole and Maddie's presentation was very accurate. They had a lot of knowledge about their subject and did a good job of explaining it. You also were able to give them some advice but still let them know how good of a job they did. Nice Job this week Hayley!

    3. Hayley, you're presentation was very good! Not only did we learn a lot about this topic but you did as well! I agree, the PowerPoint was pretty short but you and Jess lengthened out the speech from just your knowledge on the subject. Though it was a pretty gloomy subject, you seemed to really describe the mood well in your presentation. Good job!

  2. Hayley and Jess's presentation was very informative. I think my favorite work that was covered was "A Rose for Emily." It was a very interesting. One thing I liked most about the presentation was the videos. I like how there was a variety of different videos that related to different works that were covered. My favorite was the "A Rose for Emily" video. It was something visual we could see along with the story we read. The discussions we had during this presentation were a lot deeper and more interesting than some of the other discussions we had. In liked this because the class could easily share their ideas. Our class does very well with these types of discussions I feel like. You two did a very good job going over the authors and explaining the meaning in different parts of the different works!

Maddie and Nicole's presentation was fabulous! I think that so far it was the most well presented and informative presentation. My favorite author was Langston Hughes. His poetry was very personal. I think that it showed the real views of the African American people of this time period. The Harlem Renaissance was a pivotal time in the history of the African American people. At this time the African American people were able to get their music, literature, paintings, and other works out into world like the white people have been. Without this time I really don't think that the African American works would have ever been this well known. I have a lot of respect for the people during the Harlem Renaissance. I'm sure that these artists endured a lot of criticism and may have been discriminated against even more than other African American people. It is hard for us to imagine what these people went through because we have never really experienced it ourselves. They sometimes were not credited with their good works and African American artists, especially women, had their prizes taken away if they one contests. These prizes were then given to a white contestant which was very rude.
Great job on both groups of presenters!!!

    1. Rachel, I think that you had a very good review for both presentations. Hayley and Jess had a good video with the preview for "A Rose for Emily." Even if it looked a little fake, it showed what some of the backround was for the book. I really liked what you said about the class discussions. I don't think that I have been a part of any class before that gets so into discussing issues. I think that your assesment of Nicole and Maddie's presentation is something that everyone can agree with. They seemed very comfortable speaking in front of the class and were able to have discussion points with everybody. Great blog this week Rachel.

    2. Rachel, I'm glad you liked the videos. We tried to put a few of them in there so it did not get boring juts listening to Jess and I talk the whole time. Also we tried to make the class discussion something that everyone could participate in. Also "A Rose for Emily" was my favorite piece that we went over as well. I think Maddie and Nicole did a wonderful job as well. They knew all about there information. Not just what was in the book but the background information on the time period. Everything flowed so well together. I think that both of your blogs were very good this week!

    3. Rachel,I agree with what you said about Hayley and Jess's videos. I liked that they had a lot of different videos for us to watch. I liked the cheesy "trailer". It was funny but also very close to the story. Thank you for saying our presentation was the best so far, that means an awful lot to me! I worked really hard and I'm glad it all paid off!

    4. Rachel, I also enjoyed "A Rose for Emily" the most in Hayley and Jess's presentation. It was a mysterious gloomy story but it really described their theme very well and the class seemed to discuss it very easily. They really had a lot of knowledge on what they were doing and I agree that it was very informative. And I also agree Maddie and Nicole's was the best so far. They did so good explaining the subject of racism.

  3. I think that Hayley and Jess did a good job on their presentations this past week. I liked that they started their presentations with a video. The group before them showed the video a bit later into the program, but the video in the beginning really helped to set the stage of the presentation. It was a video that read some of Edgar Lee Masters’s “Spoon River Anthology”. It is a collection of short stories about people that have passed away. The video was a guy reading one of the stories and it had very little emotion. However, I think that this was appropriate because the stories didn’t really hold a lot of feeling. He was my favorite author because he seemed to have all of the short stories fit together and make one big book with them. The next part of the presentation was from William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”. This story talked about death and how a very woman was left to live the rest of her life alone. As I was reading, I had only seen the word “rose” twice. I might have missed a couple, but when it was used it was usually referring to how slowly the dust rose when people sat down on the couch. The other time is used when the people at her house rose slowly from the couch. I think that this is significant to the story because Emily had never really received a rose. All of her family had died and the guy who was going to marry her left. She didn’t really have a joyful live and it is opposite of what the title is called. I think that Hayley and Jess did a nice job of relating the stories to the topic of the collection. “Shadows of the Past” seems like a very dark subject and the stories were about death and the people of the past. Great Job Jess and Hayley!

Nicole and Maddie did a great job with their presentations. They knew what they were talking about and provided the class with a lot of background information. I liked the way that they had the class read a bunch of short poems. They were short and simple, but they had a lot of powerful information in them. They were able to talk about all of the poems in one day and they did it in a way that it wasn’t too much information. The second day was a background of the authors and of the Harlem Renaissance. I really liked the collection because I think that it was a very easy topic to discuss. Blacks versus whites was a big deal during that time period and Nicole and Maddie had good discussion points. My favorite poem was “I, Too” by Langston Hughes. In the beginning it showed how blacks felt before the civil rights movement, but they later started to feel like they belonged. They always had hope that they could be equal with whites and they were very strong people. I think that the most important lesson that I learned was that even though blacks were picked on, they still preserved. They never gave up hope of a better future and they eventually got it. Maddie and Nicole were very clear when they spoke and were able to keep the audience engaged. They also did a good job of relating the past to the present. This generation is very accepting of others and the music and paintings of today’s times show that. Good Job Nicole and Maddie!

    1. Camille, like I said before we tried to make it interesting with videos. Sometimes when people do presentations all they do it go up and talk. And I know that if some one got up and juts talked the whole time I would get bored. So we tried to make it interesting. Also when we had the video play the poems sometimes it is easier to get the setting of the poem when someone else is reading it. I'm glad you liked "A Rose for Emily" I feel like that was the favorite among the class. You also did a good job on the other part of your blog. Nicole and Maddie did a wonderful job this week. All the poems made me think that this problem with the African Americans is still happening today. That makes me sad to know that we still haven't got over some of these problems. I think that you made some good points in your blogs with week!

    2. Camille, it is amazing how many aspects we agree on between our two blogs! Starting with Hayley and jess, I agree with how their format was different by starting out with a video. This gave us some more interest instead of just explanations right away. I too only found the two instances of a rose in "A Rose for Emily." You also took into account the work of Masters, who was very difficult to understand for me, but I'm glad you like him. When speaking of Nicole and Maddie, I found that they also did a much different format from the presentation than either of the other groups before them. It was very interesting to get the entire comparison on all of their short poems but then also receive a background on the entire time period. Their presentation covered every topic imaginable, from art to music to writings. We still hear the music and see the art today. I agree with your view of how the African Americans were treated and how our society is so much more different today. Good Job Camille!

  4. The blogs this week were very different from each other. We started out the week with Hayley and Jess as the presenters. When I thought of their collection as a whole, I could only think of one word: gloom. The works seemed so depressing and monotone at some points that they were not always easy to grasp. However, I think that the ways both Hayley and Jess presented the works gave us the extra explanations that we needed when we were in a state of confusion. The works started out with a collection of short poems from Edgar Lee Masters, who I found to be very confusing and dark. When I first saw the videos of his works, I was not too impressed with the speaker, but later realized that that is exactly how they are supposed to be read. I like how he was able to connect all of his poems together in one way or another. My favorite piece that the pair covered would have to be A Rose for Emily. I found it very peculiar and mysterious, but still graspable and had a story line. I find these types of mysteries very interesting. There were so many twists that people cannot put together fully until the end. While reading, I only noticed the word rose a couple times. Before beginning, I thought that the rose would be a comparison to her house as being her only thing of beauty. As we went on, I only noticed the words when speaking of rising dust or a person rising. Overall, I was most impressed by the presenters. I could tell that each of them had stepped out of their comfort zones and presented beautifully. Great job guys!!

Nicole and Maddie's collection was the most recognizable topic for us out of all of the presentations so far. We have all had some background with the Harlem Renaissance at some point in our lives, and the stories about discrimination are still being brought up today with some situations still occurring. My personal favorite in the entire collection that they covered would have to be the poem by Langston Hughes, "I, Too." It was short, with only a couple of lines, but really gave a kickstart to the entire collection and what it was about. The African Americans knew that change was coming, but realized that they had to endure all of the suffering that would come before in order to achieve their equality. One of my favorite parts that kept happening throughout the presentation was when the girls would ask us to make a comparison and contrast to the poems that they covered. I could tell that it was a class favorite when the girls played the music of the Jazz Age, especially such a beautiful song. I don't think the girls could have changed much in their presentation to make it any better. They knew their presentation and information so well, were loud enough, provided information in every aspect of the Harlem Renaissance, and made eye contact. Good job girls!!

    1. Thanks for your input Carli! It is nice to hear that we did good. The poems were gloomy, and sort of depressing. It contrasts highly with the collection that Nicole and Maddie had together. Their presentation was really well done. They covered topics that we knew about already, and that added to the conversations. This presentation had good length and depth. This presentation was really well done.

    2. Carli, I really enjoy how you found something positive to say about everything in your blog, even in the darkness of Jess and Haley's collection with "A Rose for Emily." I agree that "gloom" is an extremely appropriate word to describe this collection and Edgar Lee Masters. His work was very gloomy. Both Haley and Jess did a fine job. For Maddie and Nicole, they also did a good job with their collection on the Harlem Renaissance. I also thought it was smart of them to have us compare poem after poem because it made us think, and it showed us how they all go together.

    3. Carli, I agree with your view about the presentations covered this week. Hayley's and Jess's presentation topics were gloomy. I found "A Rose for Emily" both sad and disturbing. At first I was confused by the story, but Jess and Hayley did a great job of explaining it. As for Maddie's and Hayley's collection, I found it enjoyable. They did a great job incorporating many different key points such as African American art, poetry, and musicians. I loved how they included pictures of art into their power point, and how they included songs for each musician (videos)!!!! I thought this group did an excellent job overall.

    4. Carli, I really hate commenting on people's critques of me because I disagree so much! Thank you for thinking all that nice stuff though. I was really glad that everyone liked the poems and found the meanings and other aspects that we wanted to discuss. I'm really glad everyone liked the music, that was one of my biggest concerns! Thanks for such a good review Carli.

  5. Jess and Hayley's presentation offered a surplus of information. Of the authors that were in the collection, Edgar Lee Masters stuck out to more me than the other authors. Mainly because his "Spoon River Anthology" reminded me of another author. With "Spoon River Anthology" being a collection of short poems all based around a fictional small town and the people that live there. This reminded me of Stephen King and how one of stereotypes his writing is known for is that everything he wrote has at some part taking place in Maine. Too bad that Masters could not keep the popularity that "Spoon River Anthology" started. The short part of the video of the guy reading the collection was probably a very dull one. The reader was a little monotone. The other video on "A Rose for Emily" that was a movie trailer was much more interesting. The actual story was weird since, despite the word being in the title, rose was used twice in the entire work and only at the very end. As for the actual presentation given to the class, it was well structured, and there was time for us to participate in the discussion.
Maddie and Nicole's presentation covered a very interesting era of literature. I actually did find it interesting how many different perspectives there were in the views on racism. The Harlem Renaissance writers all took a different approach for how they showed it. Some were more hostile than others when writing. I also liked how the time period had many other ways to spread the resistance to racism. There was music and art to go along with the literature. All of the people that took a stand in the Harlem Renaissance were really gutsy to do so. The racism was much stronger during the time period than it is now. An example is with the case of Lois Mailou Jones, who often had her art prizes revoked purely for her race. As for the actual presentation, It was done in a nice manner. The presentation continued with a large amount of group discussion. The progression may have been a little slower in doing this, but it added depth to what was discussed. The music videos were also a good method of showing what the music in the time period was like. Our presenters were also well prepared for what information was being given on the day of the presentation, which shows professionalism.

I agree with you on Maddie and Nicole's presentation. They did really good, and acted professional. The in-depth discussions were really good, and they were great to have in class. The entire presentation was clear, precise, well structured, it was overall well done.
      Nice views on this Tyler.

    2. Tyler, I never thought of comparing Edgar Lee Masters to Stephen King, but the more I think about it, you are very correct on this statement. I also wish that "Spoon River Anthology" would have received better reviews than it did. I thought it was very interesting learning about it. You have many of the same views that I do regarding the Harlem Renaissance. I find it very unique that the authors were able to remain positive, no matter how harsh the situation was. This is such a difficult subject to discuss because of the many views that different people have. I thought both presentations were very good.

  6. I thought that our (Hayley's and mine) collection was very gloomy. I did not feel as if there was as much to these authors as in other collections. The presentation after ours, done by Nicole and Maddie, had many interesting authors in it. Our authors were always seeming to have problems with accepting what was happening, but the people in Nicole's and Maddie's collection seemed to be happier, despite what they were going through. The authors in the Harlem Renaissance were much more upbeat and looking forward to what will happen. The authors in our collection were dwelling too much on what had happened, and they were suffering for it. Overall, i thought we did good with our presentation given how gloomy these authors were.
I enjoyed Nicole's and Maddie's presentation. They did very good. They were clear and precise, along with making the topic interesting. This presentation was very well done, and their keynote presentation was well done. My favorite poem that they covered was "I, Too." I liked the attitude the author had, it was not gloomy, but hopeful. This got away from the gloomy attitude that our authors had about life.
    Well done Nicole and Maddie!

    1. I agree with all the interesting authors that were in the collection that Maddie and Nicole presented. I personally liked seeing how the different authors made their points with a different tone. They were rather positive for all the discrimination that they had to endure. I also thought that the keynote was well organized and was easy to comprehend exactly what information was intended to be passed on.

    2. Jess, the authors in your presentation presented very dark and gloomy works. I understand that it was probably hard to talk positive about these authors because of how gloomy their works were. Maddie and Nicole had a presentation that was very interesting. I wish that I was doing that presentation because it would have been fun to present. Jess, you along with Hayley did very well presenting this gloomy presentation. It was probably difficult to present, but you guys did an excellent job I. Presenting that to the class. Overall, a very good job. I know I enjoyed your presentation.

    3. Jess, the authors in your collection were very dark and gloomy. This is a lot different than Maddie and Nicole's presentation because they had a more uplifting collection. Some parts were sad when dealing with how the African Americans were treated, but a lot of things were good because it showed how the African Americans started to get treated better as time went on. I think that both groups did a great job presenting and the presentations were very enjoyable.

  7. I thought Hayley and Jess had a good presentation that was presented well. Their collection had some very informative information in it. The short story that they covered was a very good short story. "A Rose for Emily" was a very interesting story. It kept me interested throughout the whole story. I also enjoyed the video for "A Rose for Emly." It was not anything that I would expect. It was great to have some sort of visual to go along with us as we read the story. It really presented to me the true meaning of the story. I also liked hearing about the "Spoon River Anthology." Edgar Lee Masters seemed like a very interesting person. The presentation was very good as I did not find many flaws in this presentation. Hayley and Jess, you two deserve two thumbs up for this presentation. It was presented well, and the information was material that I found interesting. It is not often where we get to learn this material. I also enjoyed how much our class participates in the discussion. This also brings out the true meaning of the collection.

The Harlem Renaissance is a subject that is tough to discuss with some people. Many people are offended when talking about this, and many people are insulted. Maddie and Nicole did very well in their presentation. I always find it interesting to learn about is subject. I really did not have a favorite poem because I thought all of the, were very interesting. I did like the work of Countee Cullen though. Being that it was a time where black people were discriminated against severely, Cullen did an excellent job of bringing those experiences into words. I also enjoyed hearing the different styles of music presented to us. Louis Armstrong was an excellent musician. Much like you Maddie, I also enjoy the song "What a Wonderful World." Armstrong just seemed so happy when the video was presented. It was great how he put so much emotion into the song. He really did a great job. As far as thinking about the Harlem Renaissance, I have much respect for it. It is just so hard to believe that black people were discriminated against st much. Like Mr. Straub said was that he lived through it, we just are learning about it. It makes more sense to people that actually lived through that era. Maddie and Nicole, you two did an excellent job in presenting this presentation to us.

    1. Informative information, as redundant of a statement as that was, it was accurate. The video for "A Rose for Emily" was a well designed video, still do not know if it was for a real movie or not. The racism that was happening in the Harlem Renaissance is one of the toughest topics to discuss. Probably because people just want to bury the topic and think nothing more of it. I still think that the people that stood up against this in the Harlem Renaissance time period were brave to do so.

    2. Andrew, I also found "A Rose for Emily" interesting, but in my opinion I found the story weird and disturbing. Then seeing the video/trailer about it seemed to match the story line, but the funny thing is I never remember seeing that movie advertised. As for Maddie's and Hayley's presentation I found their topics very interesting and fun. The Harlem Renaissance was a period mixed emotions about future equality and racism. The literary works covered include many poems such as "Incident." I also liked the African American art pictures in their presentation. I also liked how they had music videos for each musician covered in their collection.

  8. Hayley's and Jess's presentation well presented. I liked how they had more than one video that related to their presentation. In their collection the major literary work studied was the "A Rose for Emily." I found this literary work confusing at first and a little disturbing. The whole time I was reading I wondered what a rose had to do with the story. In total I only remember reading the word rose two or three times. This story was weird, but was explained well during the presentation. Great discussion points as well.

I found Maddie's and Nicole's presentation the best so far. I found their collection very interesting and enjoyable. Throughout this presentation I have learned about the various topics, authors, and musicians during the Harlem Renaissance. I enjoyed many parts about this presentation, especially the poems. Each poem presented the different ways African Americans felt about racism and future equality. The Harlem Renaissance was a time full of different emotions such as hope. African Americans' strive to make themselves known was very evident in this time period. As explained in the presentation African American art and music became popular, but sadly in some cases their works were rejected. The main/only reason African American works were rejected was because of their ethnicity. I found this presentation informative, interesting, and the best so far. Great Job girls!

    1. Marla, I agree with you about "A Rose for Emily" about it being disturbing. Edgar Lee Masters wrote very dark and twisted. I still did find it interesting though. I also only saw "rose" mentioned a few times throughout the story. The story was well presented. Haley and Jess did well. I agree with you that Maddie and Nicole did a fine job as well. I also found their presentation informative and interesting. They had a good collection and presented it well.

I appreciate the comments on the presentation that Maddie and I gave, and I am glad everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. The collections 14 and 15 are both very interesting to me, but I am glad that our collection was more upbeat and hopeful!

  9. I really enjoyed Hayley and Jess's presentation. My favorite part of the collection was "A Rose for Emily." It was very strange, which kept me wanting to read on. The video the group used for this story was good. They worked well together, and helped each other out when one was stumbling. It was a true partnership that worked well. The only thing I would recommend is the fact that note cards made it so much easier to flow with the information, and recommend the groups going next to think about using them!
I enjoyed the collection Maddie and I had. It is very interesting and inspiring. It really makes us appreciate that we never had to go through such hard times. It gives me another type of respect for the African Americans who were striving for a better life and didn't quit until they got it. Yet some people still don't agree with racial equality, we have a black president representing our country and many influential people in history and today that are black. I hope everyone enjoyed our presentation and I appreciate the positive feedback!

  10. This past week, Haley and Jess did a fine presentation. To be honest, my favorite part of it was “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. Faulkner’s work really reflected the collection title, “Shadows of the Past.” His writing is very dark and almost disturbing in a twisted way. While “A Rose for Emily” may have been morbid and disturbing, I still really liked it. I found the story interesting and enjoyable, even if it was disturbing. I thought that the slide show was most beneficial because it outlined their presentation well for note-taking. I also found their multiple videos interesting as well. I thought it was creative and different to have videos just for listening, and it brought the poetry to life. To be honest, “rose” was only mentioned a few times in Faulkner’s story, which contradicted my expectations; I thought the rose would be more prominent in the story, but that could have been just me looking from a different perspective. Either way, well done Jess and Haley.

I also really liked the Maddie and Nicole’s presentation this week. They provided a lot of background on the time period and different authors, artists, and prominent musicians. I really enjoyed the Louis Armstrong video. My favorite poem was probably “I, Too” by Langston Hughes. I enjoyed how he brought to attention the harshness of African American life, but at the same time, had an up-beat attitude and was very optimistic. The Harlem Renaissance is a good topic to discuss, which gave Maddie and Nicole a slight advantage because we had an in-class essay of that era. I really liked the handout of people because it provided essential background. The Harlem Renaissance started a movement and introduced new styles of music and art that we still use today. Well done Maddie and Nicole.

    1. I completely agree with you when you say that the word "Rose" was expected more in "A Rose for Emily." It was also my favorite piece from Hayley and Jess's presentation. They did very well in their work.
Thank you for your positive feedback on our presentation. I found our collection very interesting and it made it quite easy to talk about since it was something that I feel our generation finds so unimaginable. We don't feel so prejudice like they did in the past.

    2. Maria, I also really enjoyed Maddies and Nicoles presentation. They had a great collection to talk about. My favorite poem would have to be "America", it showed a lot of emotion and feeling throughhout the poem. Im very intersted in that time period also, so it helped with me liking it the best.

    3. Marla, I also really liked Maddie and Nicole's presentation. I think that they did a really great job with their collection, and I really enjoyed all of the poems that they chose. 11. Hayley and Jess's presentation was very good, and they did a great job with it, but I did not really enjoy the stories in their collection very much. They did do a great job, but the stories and poems that were included in the collection were rather sad and depressing. However, you did a great job of making everything more interesting, even though I wasn't particularly interested in the stories because of their basic nature. "A Rose For Emily" was the most interesting work that we were to read from, and it was very interesting. I only saw the word "rose" used about one or two times in the story, and every time, it seemed to be almost in passing,as if the author wasn't making a point of the roses, which I thought was odd considering he name of the short story. Overall, good job with your presentation!

Maddie and Nicole definitely had the best presentation yet! I'm not sure how Leah and I are going to live up to it tomorrow. They were not well spoke, and entirely knew what they were talking about. They also had a very interesting topic, which may be part of the reason that they seemed so at ease while they were presenting. It was good that they used things that we had learned in different classes to tie everything together with the ideas of segregation, racism, and even voting. We also went into greater detail about the Harlem Renaissance than I had realized. They both did an absolutely amazing job, and I hope my presentation comes close to how good theirs was!

    1. Tori I agree with you on how Jess and Hayleys book collections werent as fun as other collections, but I feel that they did have a lot of helpful information on their authors such as William Faulkner. I also only saw the word "rose" in the story a few times. I expected more. So good observance of that.

    2. Tori, I completely agree with how well all four of the presenters did this week. This is gonna be a tough week to follow up on, and i am right after you. I found that Hayley and Jess both stepped out of their comfort zones and stepped up to the plate with their sort of depressing poems. I saw the word rose the same amount of times as you, which I also find peculiar with the name of the story. I think that Nicole and Maddie did a great job, and I like how you explained their expansion of the Harlem Renaissance from what we learned in school.

  12. On Jess and Hayley's presentation, I felt that there could have been some improvement on the presentation aspect of the two days. The short story, "A Rose For Emily", was very different. Was very depressing I felt because this woman never came out of her house and didn't socialize with anyone after her father died. I feel that she was mentally ill at times. This story was a good one to pick their presentation because it had many focus and conversation points. Their presentation related to the collections title, Shadows of the Past. I felt that Emily in the story just lived in her past in the story because she didn't want to move on with her life after her father died. Also this really showed Faulkner's attitude in his writings. I felt that the word "rose" was a description for Emily because roses are very beautiful but old fashioned I feel. Which is how Emily seemed. Faulkner seemed to have went through many hard times such as his wife dying, but he still wrote many poems and stories to make himself famous. Jess and Hayley all together I felt your presentation was fine, but maybe more work on not reading write off of the television screen, but it was the first presentation on the year so it was still good.

Maddie and Nicole, your presentation was full of great subjects and information that really kept me interested. I personally love that time period that those poems were written. The African American poets if that time were full of emotion, so they had great enthusiasm in their writings. Many of them talked about the good times to come in the future, and to be patient and wait it all out. My favorite author of the Harlem Renaissance would have to be Langston Hughes. His works had so much of his emotional feeling put in them, which made me respect him more. The music made up such as jazz is still used in our music today. Many times I still here the song, "What A Wonderful World" on the radio by Louis Armstrong. Therefore, I really loved your presentation and collection. I also felt that you two did a great job on you speaking parts of the presentation! Well done!

    1. Emma, good job on your blog! I really didn't think of Emily being mentally ill, but that really does seem obvious now that you've said something about it. Good observation! I also appreciated the music played by Maddie and Nicole. I think that it really helped to get us into the feel of the time period and the different aspects of it.

    2. I also agree with you that there could have been some improvement, but it was still a good presentation! The short story was very different and depressing, but it reflect how Faulkner felt. The story did fit in well with this collection. I really enjoyed Nicole and Maddie's presentation as well. The poems were full of interesting stories and I like to learn about this kind of stuff. Good blog!

  14. Jess and Hayley had an overall good presentation. I found Edgar Lee Masters rather interesting. He grew up with many financial struggles and even had to leave school because of it. This didn't stop him from continuing his studies. He eventually started to write more and more. His poems reflect his life. I learned a lot from the presentation. The video really helped us to see what the poems were like from this time. If I were presenting this collection I would have tried to read off the PowerPoint less. The word "rose" was not used as much as I thought it would be in the story. I think the word rose sort of describes Emily though, as she is older and special. I found this story very odd, but it reflect Faulkner's personality.
I really enjoyed Nicole and Maddie's presentation. I got a lot of information out of it. I like Louis Armstrong. He grew up being very poor, but still managed to become successful and was the most famous musician during the Harlem Renaissance. This collection showed much of the racism towards blacks. The most important thing I got out of it was that these African American writers still had hope for America even during the worst times. Many writers wrote about the harsh treatment from whites, interracial relationships, and how they knew things would eventually get better for them.

  15. Hayley and Jess did well in their presentation. I always feel that its difficult to teach a class and I feel like they had a particularly difficult collection. The author I found the most interesting from their collection was the man who wrote the epitaph poems. His idea really amazed me and I was really excited to discuss his poems, however we really didn’t get into them. I thought that he had a really unique idea with that poem. I love to write and his idea really inspired ideas in me. Unfortunately, I feel like we didn’t really discuss how their collection connected to their theme. Thinking about it now, I feel like Nicole and I didn’t either. My favorite part of Hayley and Jess’s presentation was their radio reading of a poem. I thought that was a really neat aspect to add. When I was reading “A Rose for Emily” I honestly don’t remember reading rose once in the story. Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention and it has been awhile since I read it.
This is the part of this blog that I was dreading. I hate critiquing myself and I especially hate reading other people’s comments about my presentation. I’m very bad at taking praise and critiques. I would rather stick my head in the ground like an ostrich. Like Hayley said, I’m really glad to be done. I feel like Nicole and I did well and I was especially proud of myself. On the second day I felt like I struggled a little, but according to other people it wasn’t as noticeable as I felt it was. I really enjoyed our conversations we had during our presentation. I feel like we got a lot of people to participate. I really liked our collection because it was easy to talk about and interesting so I didn’t fall asleep presenting it. My favorite part of our presentation was the music video of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. I love that song and that’s why I chose it for our PowerPoint. I was glad when other people enjoyed it, because I was afraid everyone would be bored watching it.

    1. Maddie, I don't really remember reading the word rose in the story of A Rose For Emily, either. I remember what had happened, but I do not really remember the specifics and I think that I, like you, haven't read it in a while so I will have to refresh my memory.
I think, however, that your presentation and Nicole's presentation was the best that I have seen yet. The two of you did a fantastic job on the whole thing and I really liked the things that were taught to us.

  16. I enjoyed Hayley and Jess's presentation a lot. It was very interesting and informative! My favorite part of their whole presentation was "A Rose For Emily". Their whole section to present was called "Shadows of the Past". This section had a lot to do with death. In a Rose for Emily, everything good she had was gone. Either someone died or someone just left. She was left alone. This story was very mysterious and gave me a dull kind of gloomy vibe. It wasn't a happy story at all. I only noticed the word Rose a few times in this story. This presentation related to the theme, "Shadows of the Past" because shadows are gloomy and dark and sometimes the past can be gloomy and dark. Overall Hayley and Jess presented very well and barely had many struggles at all. They did very well and I learned a lot from it.

I especially enjoyed Nicole and Maddie's presentation the most so far. They had a few videos, all being very good and entertaining. Their theme was about the Renaissance Era. This era was all about racial discrimination against African Americans. All of the poems in this section were about an African American persons view of the discrimination. Most of the poems were negative and about how they were treated badly. Some were about how they just laughed it off and let it go. They knew that they really weren't much different. My favorite poet was definitely Langston Hughes. His poems really showed what people really thought and something that people that have gone through this discrimination felt and could relate to very well. This Era was a terrible time and Maddie and Nicole explained it very well and showed the importance of this Era. Racial discrimination is very terrible. What people used to do to the African Americans is awful and it shouldn't have happened. They did very well helping everyone understand this concept!

    1. Leah, I agree with you that my favorite part of Hayley and Jess's presentation was "A Rose for Emily." It really showed the theme of the collection, Shadows of the Past. Nicole and Maddie did a good job explaining the racial discrimination of their time period. They went into detail on everything and really knew their material and what they were talking about. Good blog!

    2. Leah, I never really gave much thought to the title of the works to the story for Hayley and Jess' presentation. I think that you have a good point, pointing out how Shadows of the Past relate to A Rose for Emily because of the vibe the story gave off. I don't really think that the poems in Maddie and Nicole's presentation were very negative at all, though. I thought that most of them seemed to be very happy. African Americans had to go through a lot of struggles, but the ones who wrote the poems in this collection seemed to keep a positive outlook on the future because they thought that it could bring them better times.

  17. From Hayley and Jess' presentation, I think that I too believe that A Rose for Emily was my favorite part. The story seemed so sad. Whenever I was reading it, I felt that I could really put myself there and that it was an interesting place to be. It gave off a sort of mysterious feeling, one that makes me want to keep reading to really find out what is going on and what happened. These stories seem the most interesting to me. As for their presentation, I think that they did very well. They both looked at the class well and let us participate. The video of the story of A Rose for Emily was interesting. If that were a real movie, I would definitely go out and watch it! The only thing that I would try to improve about their presentation was to keep it moving. It seemed that at times neither knew what to say, but I think that that was only a few times and for the most part they moved along very well!
Maddie and Nicole's presentation has been my favorite so far. I really liked all of the poems in their collection. It seemed to have been a time of discrimination against black people, and instead of the black people feeling sorry for themselves and being upset, they looked to the future and to a more positive side of things. This really inspired me to try to look at things that way. I don't know what I would have done if I had lived during their time period, but I do not believe that I would have been as happy and positive as these poets were. I especially liked the video of A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Maddie and Nicole did the best presentation so far and I hope that mine will be able to compete with theirs!
